PayPal is focused on addressing environmental and climate-related risks and opportunities for our company, our employees, our customers, our suppliers, and the communities where we operate.

We use a science-based approach, including: mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, efficiently managing our natural resources, exploring environmental innovations across our products and services, and engaging our employees in sustainability.

Our approach to environmental sustainability

Managing our Impact

Since 2017, we've shared environmental updates in our annual Global Impact Reports, showing progress in sustainability based on our and ISO 14001-aligned management system. For more details, see our Environmental Risk Management Policy.

Mobilizing our People

Our employees are passionate about the environment and volunteer their time and skills year-round to tackle sustainability issues. From Earth Day activities to exploring environmental innovations, we’re harnessing their creativity and passion for our sustainability efforts.

Supporting resilience

Through strategic partnerships, PayPal aims to boost financial resilience in communities vulnerable to climate change, support relief efforts for those affected by disasters, and address environmental impacts.

Climate-related risk management

Science-based Emissions Targets

We have set ambitious, science-based emissions reduction targets, informed by stakeholder input and validated by the Science Based Targets initiative. We transparently track progress toward our goal of achieving net-zero GHG emissions by 2040 and meeting medium-term targets aligned with limiting temperature rise to 1.5˚C.

Renewable & Efficient Energy Use

We’re optimizing our global workplaces to support collaboration in our high-performance culture. Since 2021, we’ve sourced 100% of our global data center energy from renewable sources. We focus on cost-effective energy efficiency and renewable energy investments across our office locations.

Transparency & Reporting

We’re committed to full transparency in our management of climate risks and opportunities. In line with the recommendations from the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), we provide disclosures on PayPal’s approach to addressing climate-related governance, strategy, risk management, and metrics and targets in our TCFD Index.

Additional climate-related disclosures and information about PayPal’s environmental sustainability efforts can be found in our Global Impact Report and our latest CDP Climate Change Questionnaire.

Supply Chain

We engage our largest suppliers by spend to communicate our climate-related risk management priorities. We partner with CDP to collect information and provide resources to help our vendors develop greenhouse gas inventories and learn more about climate-related risk management.

Water Management

As a digital business, we already use relatively low volumes of water. Our efficiency efforts include low-flow faucets and fixtures at our global office locations. At our San Jose headquarters, we've invested in intelligent flow control and monitoring technologies. We also explore local water conservation opportunities and report our annual water consumption in the Global Impact Report.

Waste Management

We offer waste recycling at nearly all our global office locations. Some also provide food waste composting. And we always work on new ways to expand recycling efforts.

We ensure service providers maintain ISO-certified programs for environmental, health, safety, and quality management. Our e-waste management procedure requires IT asset disposal providers to be certified by R2e-Stewards, or WEEELabex for responsible e-waste management.
